Full Time – Radio Technician
Under the direction of the Radio Shop Supervisor, oversees, plans and performs the installation, maintenance and operation of the UPD radio system, mobile data computers, communications radio equipment and telephone equipment wiring, frequency monitors, and electronic communication equipment, radio modems, portable radios, mobile radios, VHF/UHF radio systems, mobile/cell phone equipment and other equipment‑associated with the technical and operational systems of the Organization. Assists in the planning of future radio system development and updating master plan. Installs and monitors Secure Access (NetMotion) licenses for network connection on all MDT’s. Audits licenses for correct licenses numbers. Interacts with other departments, consultants, engineers and contractors regarding equipment usage, purchases and updates. Works with other UPD departments on radio system issues. Performs a variety of administrative work as well as technical duties. Maintains comprehensive records. This is a highly skilled position requiring technical and operational abilities and knowledge.
Provides essential connectivity and operational support for the UPD network. Basic skills, knowledge, and experience are utilized to install hardware and software, to diagnose basic problems, and to affect corrective actions at times with the assistance of more experienced professionals.

Intern – UPD FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS UNIT

So you would like to be considered for an internship at the Unified Police Department ForensicInvestigations Unit? It can be a very challenging and rewarding experience if you desire to work in the profession of forensic science. However, the field is very competitive and requires substantial “preplanning” activity including contact with us (the laboratory) at least one to two semesters in advance of your anticipated application for internship. For instance, if you would like to be considered for a fall internship, then the application and discussion should occur during spring semester and the very proactive intern candidate would be encouraged to make frequent contact with the laboratory at least a year in advance.
Education:
- Currently attending a four-year college or university or recently graduated
- Pursuing a degree in a science discipline, i.e. forensic science, criminalistics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, physical science, etc.
- Achieved a junior status (at a minimum) in college or university
- A letter of recommendation from the university that you will receive credit from, if you are receiving credit from your school
- Familiarity with general laboratory safety procedures
- Conversant with criminal investigations and the need for prudent confidentiality
- Working knowledge of ethical scientific practices

School Crossing Guards

The Unified Police Department Special Operations Division is staffed with 230 regular and substitute crossing guards for 67 area schools in Canyons, and Granite School Districts. These schools are located within Millcreek City, Holladay City, Midvale City, City of Kearns and Magna City, through a contract agreement with the UPD.
These dedicated men and women brave the various extreme weather conditions to ensure the safety of the children as they cross hazardous roadways going to and from school. The Unified Police Department appreciates these hard-working crossing guards, and we are committed to keeping our children safe.
Minimum Requirements
- Be at least age 18 years old.
- Proof of citizenship or current legal documentation to work in the United States.
- Have a valid Utah driver’s license.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- No disqualifying convictions, or offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence, the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance, or any offenses involving children.
- No illegal drug use in the last 2 years.
- Able to pass a criminal background check.
- Have transportation availale to get to crossing assignments.
- Available by phone for assignments and ability to be punctual for crossing shifts.
- Able to attend training as needed outside of school crossing assignments.
- Available during assigned school times.
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to complete online timecard.
- Willing to work in all types of weather.
- Ability to stand for periods of time from 45 minutes to one hour.
- Ability to move about an intersection to and from the middle of the street as necessary.
- Ability to reach and lock/unlock padlocks to activate school crossing lights.
- Good vision, visual depth perception, and hearing.
- Ability to discern environmental conditions for risks for children, i.e. traffic or construction.
- Ability to discern the presence of danger to children in the area of the crosswalk, and be able to react quickly to remove them to safety.
- Ability to communicate safety instructions to students.
- Ability to place and remove traffic cones.
- Ability to lift, hold and carry a traffic stop sign paddle.
- Ability to discern when to create safety breaks in traffic patterns.
- Maintain a sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
- Communicate developing safety hazards or issues related to crossing to supervisor.
- This position is a very important and critical process for children to safely get to and from school. If any of the above listed requirements are not met it can put the children at risk to danger.
